> Independence Day Of Tunisia |
Some national
holidays remember a significant day in the history of the country. Tunisia also
like that they got freedom from France in the year of 1956, President Habib
Bourguiba established a strict one-party state. He dominated the country for 31
years, repressing Islamic fundamentalism and establishing rights for women
unmatched by any other Arab nation.
Tunisia was part of the Carthaginian Empire. According to tradition, Phoenician
traders founded the city of Carthage in 814 bc at a location slightly northeast
of the site of modern Tunis.
Their agricultural resources are oak, pine, and juniper trees. Farther south,
the semiarid conditions support steppe vegetation dominated by wild grasses,
notably esparto grass, and a wide variety of shrubs.
Their economy is dominated by fossil fuel production, mining, manufacturing, and
tourism.
